Driver Shigeru Terajima in a yellow Ferrari 458 Italia was looking to make a pass on the inside of another Challenge race car in matte black. A track marshal standing by a barrier at the end if pit lane is seen applauding at Terajima's bravery when he suddenly dives away moments before the yellow Ferrari violently struck the guard rail. Decelerating from 200 mph in a split second, the energy from the impact caused the entire Ferrari to disintegrate into thousands of pieces. Bits of carbon fiber bodywork, suspension, wheels, and components litter the track and the infield. Tightly held into his seat, Shigeru Terajima was tossed around inside the Ferrari's survival cell before it rocked to a stop upside down.
First responders rush to help the driver and track marshal away from the wreck. A complicated situation, Ferrari decided to prematurely black flag the 458 Challenge event to allow the track officials to adequately tend the situation.
Fortunately, both driver Shigeru Terajima and the track marshal survived the incident. A split second reaction saved the corner worker's life as his body is later seen in the video lying face down on the grass. While Terajima was admitted into the hospital in serious condition, he is expected to make a full recovery.
